TERMS AND DESCRIPTIONS

Special Labels and Pedigrees

NGC uses different labels for different coin types and to provide collectors with alternative presentation formats for certified coins. In some cases these labels are available to high-volume submitters, or for coins from specific hoards or collections. The grading standards and terms are identical regardless of the label type, and they differ only in the appearance of the label itself.

NGC may also, upon the request of a submitter and at its discretion, assign a pedigree to a coin that indicates that it belongs or once belonged to a collection or hoard of coins. Again, the grading standards used pedigreed coins are identical for non-pedigreed coins, and they differ only in the application of the pedigree.

Silver Eagle 20th Anniversary

In celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary of the American Eagle Bullion Program in 2006, the US Mint issued commemorative sets. The Mint sold three different sets which include three different formats of both the silver and gold American Eagles, including a proof coin, an uncirculated coin with W mintmark, and a reverse proof.

NGC offers commemorative labels for the US Mint?s 20th Anniversary Silver and Gold Eagles issued in 2006. The label is used for all Reverse Proof 2006 W Eagle Gold $50 and Reverse Proof 2006 P Eagle Silver $1. It was and remains eligible for other 20th Anniversary Silver and Gold Eagles submitted to NGC in their original sealed mint packaging. Regular proof and Mint State coins submitted to NGC in open boxes are not eligible for this label.

Coins from these sets will are pedigreed as EAGLE 20TH ANNIVERSARY. The label includes an NGC emblem for the Eagle 20th Anniversary and a bar across the bottom which also reads EAGLE 20TH ANNIVERSARY. The gold coins and coins from the gold and silver set are encapsulated with a label which displays this set with a blue bar across the bottom. Coins from the three pieces silver set are encapsulated in a similar label with text in a black bar and the additional pedigree SILVER DOLLAR SET.

Custom Labels

At its discretion, NGC provides submitters the option of using custom labels for certain certification projects. These labels may feature patriotic or thematic designs and/or color variations different from the standard NGC certification label, which has a brown borders and watermark-style NGC logo image in the background. Custom labels offer an alternative presentation option. The grading standards and terminology applied to these coins are identical to those used for all NGC certification.

Certain restrictions apply to the use of some custom labels. For example, they may be restricted to high volume submissions, and are not offered on tier submissions. Some labels are used exclusively by a single submitter, and therefore are not generally available.

Collection Pedigrees

At the submitter’s request, NGC will label a coin with the name of a collection or a hoard. The word HOARD or COLLECTION will appear in this pedigree designation.

Pedigrees indicate that a particular coin belongs to a group of coins assembled by an individual or organization. They do not describe specific attributes of the coin, and the marketplace may not place any premium on specific pedigrees. Most often, they relate to the origin, source, or owner of a coin. We provide this option to allow collectors to have their names or the names of their collections to appear on the NGC label.

Sometimes, pedigrees are used because of the specific labeling needs of an individual company selling these coins. As such, it is important to fully understand the meaning of a pedigree, as well as the seller and price of the coin.

SPECIAL NOTE: In the case of a few very select collections, the word COLLECTION is omitted. These include well-known and widely publicized collections such as Garrett, Eliasberg, Pittman, and Norweb.
